Holkham fun run 2018 640CF

Run for your church at Holkham

2018: This year’s Archdeacon’s Charge fun run and picnic will be held on Bank Holiday Monday May 7 at Holkham on the north Norfolk coast.

The Archdeacon's Charge is an annual sponsored fun run, walk and family picnic, which is open to everyone. It's a fun way to raise money for local churches, schools or youth groups as well as for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Holkham fun run cars 2018 640CThe Earl and Countess of Leicester have generously invited the Diocese of Norwich, which organises the event, to use the stunning grounds of Holkham Hall, near Wells-next-the-Sea. This year's course is 5km long and participants can choose how many laps they wish to attempt.  The route for those walking will be around the beautiful lake.

The event, which runs from 10am until 3pm, has grown each year and includes a popular craft market, live music performances, classic cars and a large family play area. Refreshments including bacon butties and cakes will be available throughout the day.

The Archdeacon’s Charge was founded in 2010 by the Ven John Ashe, the recently retired Archdeacon of Lynn.  The East Anglian Air Ambulance was very close to Archdeacon John's heart after they saved his wife's life following a serious car accident in 2009 when she was airlifted from the crash scene.  Since its inception the event has raised over £110,000, half of which has been donated to the Air Ambulance.

Adel MacNicol who took part last year said:
It was an experience I would thoroughly recommend. The age spread of those taking part was much greater than I had expected (at various stages I walked alongside a wonderful 80-year-old lady and later a very chatty nine-year-old). I raised £2,000, improved my fitness, met some lovely people and had a great day out and there was a great sense of camaraderie and achievement.”

My first experience of The Archdeacon’s Charge was in 2012 at Sandringham and I have participated every year since. I have seen what was initially a sponsored walk/run metamorphize into a fantastic fun-filled family day out. Last year fourteen of us from the Creakes Benefice took part and it was a great opportunity for us to get to know one another better and to support and encourage each other around the course. Some walked while others ran. Some did the full 10 miles while others did what they were able. But what was important was that we were together having fun. Participating in the Archdeacon’s Charge ignited a passion for running that has contributed to me, at 53 years old, being in the best shape of my life!
