The Truth will make you free

Philip Young reminds us that Christians are called to be truth tellers and truth seekers, and that it is truth which brings us freedom.

Christians are called to be interested in the truth.

We follow Jesus who claims to be ‘the way, the truth, and the life’ (John Chapter 14 verse 6). Jesus makes the promise that the ‘truth will make you free’ (John Chapter 8 verse 32) and He also says that the Holy Spirit is ‘the spirit of truth who will guide you into all the truth’ (John Chapter 16 verse 13).

The truth matters. If we are guided by falsehoods and lies, then it goes without saying that we will be led astray. Human beings need direction. We need to be guided by the light and not the darkness. We need to wake up and recognise that there is a spiritual battle between good and evil.

This battle is well described in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, where Paul says ‘our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness’. Ephesians Chapter 6 verse 12.

Jesus recognised the nature of this battle. As the Light of the world He came to confront the darkness. The wonderful, good news that Jesus shows us is that the goodness of God overcomes all evil. Love is greater than hate. Light overcomes darkness. We are set free from the negative human traits in our lives, the sins of selfishness and greed that so often ruin our lives.

The battle between good and evil is played out most significantly in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Here we see the love of Jesus overcoming the hatred of all those wishing for his death. Death too is overcome, showing that death is not the end, but a new beginning.

The truth is powerful. The truth is that love is always stronger than hate and that life overcomes death. God’s goodness and creativity always wins.

God is on the side of truth. We are called to be truth tellers and truth seekers. The truth shall make us free. Free to be sons and daughters of the living God.

Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth.
