Aylsham church makes space for refurbishment

Emmanuel Church Aylsham is about to launch a refurbishment programme, and is giving away a set of drums to make room for the works to take place. Tony Rothe reports.

The church is hoping to embark on the work later in 2021, to deal with essential repairs but also to bring the building up to a better standard and make it fit for purpose both for the congregation and the broader community who use the building.

Andrew Barwick, from the church leadership team, said “We have been without a resident drummer for some time now hence the drums in storage.  With the imminent building/refurbishment programme, storage will be an issue for us and as the drum kit is not in use we felt that we would like to give it to benefit another church or individual (hopefully to be used in a church setting).  Any future need we have for drums will probably see us purchase an electronic drum set!”

The building was built in 1891 and was of note as it was designed by George Skipper, an eminent architect of that period who also designed Jarrolds department store and the Royal Arcade in Norwich and several large hotels around the county. The Aylsham Gospel Hall was an early example of his work.

Andrew said “Although currently we are a relatively small congregation, we are going forward in faith for the future of God's work in Aylsham through Emmanuel, and we will shortly be presenting the plans to the church membership for consultation and agreement for a way forward. We also intend in the future to engage a full time Pastor for the church.”
