Sheringham BeachLife returns with live outreach

Sheringham BeachLife is back, in a modified form, and will launch in the town and on the beach during the last full week of this year’s summer holidays. Tony Rothe reports.

The popular children’s outreach week was restricted to an on-line offering in 2020, but is back this year with digital broadcasts in the mornings, activity packs, and family activities in the afternoons or early evenings, including a visit from a renowned magician on the last day.

Sheringham BeachLife started in 2012, with Sheringham churches working together to provide four days of children’s activities and outreach at the end of the summer holidays, as well as some one-day events throughout the year. The numbers attending have been increasing each year, reaching a peak in 2019 with over 320 children and young people coming along for at least part of the main summer outreach. Read our story about this here.

Activities were necessarily curtailed in 2020, although a virtual BeachLife video was released, which also featured in Sheringham’s virtual carnival offering. Read about this here.

Real life BeachLife is back this year, but combined with digital broadcasts as well in order to give young people and families a true BeachLife experience in as safe a way as possible. Activity packs are being prepared and the “Beach Special” will be broadcast at 10.30am each morning live on YouTube with challenges, songs, drama, the medley and, of course, the gunge tank.

BeachLife will run for 4 days, from Tuesday August 24 to Friday August 27. Afternoon and evening activities will be live family events, and will include:

  • TUESDAY : Tide Fight on the beach below the Leas from 6pm
  • WEDNESDAY : Beach Sculptures and modelling, also on the beach below the Leas from 3 to 5pm
  • THURSDAY : Putting competition on the Beeston Hill putting green from 4.30pm
  • FRIDAY : Comedian and magician Steve Legg will be performing on The Leas from 2.30pm to 4pm.

steve legg 400ATSteve Legg first hit the road with his unique and funny blend of daring escapology way back in 1988. Over three decades later, the accent is now on comedy and magic with a Christian message, and this unique blend means Steve travels the length and breadth of the UK, as well as internationally. He has worked alongside a number of household names, including Jonathan Ross, Fern Britton, Paul Ross, Helen Shapiro, Gloria Gaynor, Boyzone, Roger Whittaker, Zoe Ball, Cannon & Ball, Joe Pasquale, Gloria Hunniford, Keith Chegwin, Philippa Forrester, Fred Dinenage, Lorraine Chase and Radio 1 DJ Mark Radcliffe. He has also made numerous TV appearances.

Peter Skivington, youth pastor at Sheringham’s Lighthouse Community Church, is one of the organisers. He said, “The team were really keen to get back to a live activity week again this year, but we are combining this with the on-line skills we learned last year to provide four days of fun lively activities, and helping the children and young people discover that Jesus loves them and brings life to the full.”

BeachLife is open to all families and young people, and there is no charge to take part, although this year organisers are asking that primary ages and younger are accompanied by an adult for the live activities.
