Volunteers’ success at N Norfolk Christian centre

A team of volunteer gardeners have been making a big difference at The Pleasaunce Holiday Centre in Overstrand, and invite more to join them for their next work-party day later this month. Tony Rothe reports.

The Centre is holding another work-party morning on Saturday May 21 and would like as many people as possible to join the team of volunteers, pictured above, to help get the gardens ship-shape.

Overstrand Pleasaunce 600CFThe Christian Endeavour Holiday Centre, The Pleasaunce, right, is situated close to the beach in Overstrand, two miles south-east of Cromer. It is a Grade II* listed mansion, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for Lord and Lady Battersea.  The main house stands in 5 acres of walled grounds containing a chapel, cloisters, sunken and rose gardens and a clock tower.  The grounds extend to the cliffs overlooking Overstrand’s sandy beach. Accommodating up to 80 guests, the Centre is an ideal destination for holidaymakers, conference groups, weekend/mid-week breaks, school parties and retreats.

The centre re-opened last summer after the pandemic restrictions, and managers are once again appealing for volunteer help on Saturday May 21, to help tidy the extensive gardens around the house. Helpers are asked to bring some basic garden tools if possible.

Jess Stubenbord, who is organising the day, said “When the Pleasaunce owned 50 acres, back in the day, there were some 20 full-time gardeners.  Now there are only 5 acres, yet they only employ one part-time gardener, so we are very much reliant on the volunteers.  However in recent years visitors have said how good these gardens are looking.”

The session will run from 9.30am to 12.45pm and volunteers will be welcome to come along for all or part of the session, even for just one hour! Drinks and cake will be provided.

Please let the organisers know if you can come.
